Ethics Series: When to Worry and What to Do: Essentials of Court-Involved Therapy, Assessing Trauma

Dr. Reneau Kennedy led this training designed for community-based treating clinicians across helping professions. The workshop addressed the increasing need for mental health professionals to provide therapeutic assessments and treatment services for individuals involved, or potentially involved, in litigation. Participants explored the unique dynamics these cases presented and the special considerations required in areas such as clinical mindset, documentation, treatment planning, and service delivery.
This day-long workshop helped participants develop a clearer understanding of what to expect when their treatment services could be subject to legal scrutiny. The training provided a comprehensive overview of standards and best practices for preparing for and navigating cases where clinical and legal issues overlap.
The morning session focused on a contextual approach to case acceptance and the initiation of assessment. Additional training included examples of case conceptualization incorporating mental status examinations, evidence-based assessments for problem identification, and effective documentation practices throughout treatment and at the conclusion of services.
